Do churchgoers choose war over negotiations more than you would like?

For example, many wars in history were undertaken by one religion over other "non-believers." Do you think these are justified as being what God would recommend? Also, why do people stay with churches that historically have undertaken wars. Why not choose a peaceful religion, one that does not condone killing other people. That sounds good.
