Yes you are. That is exactly what to do. I've seen gaps as big as an inch or more. The next step in the process is called "drywall finishing". You will need the plaster type material called "drywall mud", a roll of drywall tape, and at least a 6" drywall knife. It looks like a really wide putty knife. Also, lots of drywall sanding sheets and a bit of determination. Good luck.
